A day-by-day itinerary proving you can explore Tunisia's highlights for under 120 TND per day, including accommodation, food, and transport.

Tunisia is one of the most affordable Mediterranean destinations, and with smart planning you can have an incredible week-long trip for under 800 TND (roughly 250 USD). This itinerary covers Tunis, Sidi Bou Said, Hammamet, Kairouan, and Djerba using only public transport.

Day 1-2: Tunis & Sidi Bou Said. Start in the capital. The Tunis Medina is free to explore and you can spend hours wandering the souks without spending a dinar. Visit the Bardo Museum (13 TND entry). For lunch, eat where locals eat: a lablabi bowl costs 3-5 TND, a fricasse sandwich is 1-2 TND. Take the TGM train to Sidi Bou Said (1 TND) in the afternoon. Budget accommodation in Tunis: 50-80 TND per night for a clean guesthouse near the medina.

Day 3: Hammamet. Take a louage from Tunis (about 9 TND, 1 hour). Explore the medina and kasbah (free). The beach is public and free. For lunch, try a chapati tunisien from a street vendor (4-6 TND). Stay in a budget hotel in the medina area (50-70 TND).

Day 4: Kairouan. Louage from Hammamet to Sousse (6 TND), then Sousse to Kairouan (6 TND). Visit the Great Mosque (free exterior, 12 TND for the monument circuit that covers all major sites). The medina is a UNESCO site and free to walk. Buy fresh makroudh from a bakery (3 TND for a bag). Budget hotel: 50-70 TND.

Day 5-6: Djerba. Louage to Gabes (12 TND), then louage to Houmt Souk, Djerba (9 TND). The island is perfect for two days. El Ghriba Synagogue (8 TND), Djerbahood street art (free), beaches (free). Rent a bicycle (15 TND/day) to explore the island. Fresh grilled fish lunch at the port: 20-30 TND. Budget accommodation: 60-80 TND.

Day 7: Return to Tunis. Louage back via Gabes and Sfax, or take the more scenic route through Matmata (add 5 TND for the detour to see troglodyte houses). Total transport for the return: about 20-25 TND.

Daily budget breakdown: Accommodation 50-80 TND, Food 20-35 TND (eating street food and local restaurants), Transport 8-18 TND, Activities 8-15 TND. Total average: 85-150 TND per day.

Money-saving tips: Always eat where locals eat, not tourist restaurants. Drink tap water in cities (it is safe) or buy 1.5L bottles for 0.5 TND. Negotiate louage fares only if you think you are being overcharged (fares are government-regulated). Visit museums on free days when available. Carry cash in small bills since many budget places do not accept cards.
