About This Destination
Carthage is one of the most historically significant archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. Founded by Phoenician settlers from Tyre around 814 BC, it grew into a powerful maritime empire that controlled much of the western Mediterranean and famously rivaled Rome during the three Punic Wars. The legendary general Hannibal Barca launched his audacious crossing of the Alps from here. Though the Romans destroyed the original city in 146 BC, they rebuilt it as one of the richest cities of the Roman Empire. Today the archaeological park spreads across a wealthy residential suburb of Tunis, overlooking the Gulf of Tunis. Key sites include the Antonine Baths, once the largest Roman bath complex outside Rome; the Tophet, a sacred Phoenician burial ground; the Byrsa Hill museum with its stunning collection of Punic artifacts; and the Roman amphitheater that still hosts performances during the International Festival of Carthage each summer. The Punic ports, where Carthage's legendary fleet was stationed, are still visible as two lagoons. The National Museum of Carthage on Byrsa Hill offers a comprehensive journey through 3,000 years of history. Easily accessible from Tunis via the TGM light rail, Carthage is a must-visit for anyone interested in ancient history.
