About This Destination
Sousse is Tunisia's third-largest city and one of its most popular tourist destinations, combining a rich 3,000-year history with modern beach resort appeal. Founded by the Phoenicians and later developed by the Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs, the city's layered heritage is visible at every turn. The medina of Sousse, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, is one of the best-preserved examples of early Islamic architecture in North Africa. Its high crenellated walls enclose a maze of narrow streets lined with workshops, merchants, and traditional houses. The Great Mosque of Sousse, built in 851 AD, features a distinctive crenellated exterior that doubled as a defensive fortress. The Ribat of Sousse, an 8th-century fortified monastery, served both religious and military purposes and offers panoramic views from its watchtower over the medina, port, and coastline. The archaeological museum inside the Kasbah houses one of Tunisia's finest mosaic collections, rivaling the Bardo Museum in Tunis. Modern Sousse extends along a beautiful sandy coastline with resort hotels, water sports, and the Port El Kantaoui marina — a purpose-built luxury port with yacht berths, golf courses, and an aquapark. The city is also known for its vibrant nightlife, making it popular with younger travelers. Sousse serves as an excellent base for day trips to El Djem (1 hour), Kairouan (1 hour), and Monastir (20 minutes).
