About This Destination

Tozeur is a jewel of southern Tunisia, an oasis city of over 400,000 palm trees that has served as a vital stop on trans-Saharan caravan routes for centuries. The city is immediately recognizable for its distinctive golden-brick architecture, where traditional buildings feature geometric patterns made from locally baked bricks arranged in relief. The old medina (Ouled el-Hadef quarter), dating back to the 14th century, showcases this unique style and is one of the most photogenic neighborhoods in all of Tunisia. The surrounding palm groves (the Oasis of Tozeur) produce some of the finest Deglet Nour dates in the world, and walking through the irrigated gardens is a peaceful highlight. Tozeur serves as the main base for excursions to Chott el Jerid, the largest salt lake in the Sahara, which creates extraordinary mirages and otherworldly landscapes. The nearby mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza, and Mides feature dramatic canyons, waterfalls, and villages perched on clifftops. Film fans will recognize the area from Star Wars (the Mos Espa set is 40 km west), The English Patient, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Dar Cherait Museum offers a deep dive into regional history and Saharan heritage.
